It’s been a while…

since I posted on here.  This morning Jock and I were discussing honest feedback.  He quoted this:

Of all the cants in this canting world
the cant of the critic is the hardest to bear.

On Googling to find the source, I realize that he has paraphrased:

“Of all the cants which are canted in this canting world — though the cant of hypocrites may be the worst — the cant of criticism is the most tormenting!”   Sterne, Laurence

and then I found this, which is much more to my liking.

“There is then creative reading as well as creative writing. When the mind is braced by labour and invention, the page of whatever book we read becomes luminous with manifold allusion. Every sentence is doubly significant, and the sense of our author is as broad as the world.”

Emerson, Ralph Waldo on criticism

This is interesting, but it’s not a rant. We ought to sue under the Trades Description Act 😉

Can’t help feeling poetry needs a little more thought and structure at the outset, rather than relying totally on the ability of the reader to make sense of the whole thing! And surely, a little criticism from the reader adds to the awareness of the writer, which must affect their future creative efforts? Unless they have no desire to improve their skills, of course – in which case any criticism, however helpful, is futile…

I found this in the spam! A worthwhile comment like this should not have found its way to the bin.

I agree very much with your first sentence – I do get tired of ploughing through dense and incomprehensible stream-of-consciousness stuff! And I also agree that HONEST feedback is incredibly important to the development of a writer. What I find dispiriting are endless meaningless comments.

Ouch! This has turned into a rant after all.

And so it should! Couldn’t agree more with the stream-of-consciousness thing. Might be okay as a thereputic tool for tortured souls, but please, spare the rest of blogworld from having to read it too!
And while on such a lovely, rantable subject, many people take no pains to find ‘the right word for the job’, but randomly write nouns/verbs/adjectives will nilly. Grrr!!! LOL
